AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The employees of AMR, American Medical Response, started voting on Wednesday to decide to join a union or not.
The union being proposed is the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP). The IAEP is said to the be the country's largest and fastest growing EMS unions. According to the company's website, the union has over 7,000 members who want a locally controlled EMS-only union with national clout.
In October, ProNews 7 reported that enough support was shown to force the issue to a vote. Employees of AMR said they want to make sure their their voice is heard in the workplace. The company maintains they can address the needs of the employees without a third party.
The vote is scheduled to run through noon on Thursday, we expect to know sometime Thursday afternoon if the motion is passed.
If the employees vote to unionize, there will be a two week appeals process, if it's certified, nominations for officers will be the next step.
