AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The United Way of Amarillo and Canyon has reached their goal. With your generous donations and the organization's volunteers, just over $5.4 million was raised. The co-chairs of the event say that number is not final, and that all pledges are not in quite yet. Of course, that money will be handed out to organizations funded through the United Way.
This month, we've been showing you the faces of the people who benefit from those donations. That includes our elderly and disabled, many who would go without if not for the United Way. One organization in particular is Catholic Family Service's InterFaith Hunger Project who ensures the basic needs of our neighbors. InterFaith is designed to help people 55 and older or the disabled keep their shelves stocked with food and other essentials. The store is setup like any other store, letting people choose what they want. Volunteers also deliver to those who can't get out. Catholic Family Service says many forget the elderly, and with fixed incomes and the cost of living climbing, they're seeing an increase in the number of people who need their help.
"We have found this year is our clients are actually having to stretch their dollars a little bit further then they were even last year and they don't have the ability to go out there and take a second job," said Katherine Camp, InterFaith Hunger Project.
Camp says a majority of their funding comes for the United Way, and without it, the InterFaith Hunger Project would not be able to exist.
"People who give to the United Way make it possible for us to outreach to those people and help them in ways, in ways, they need to help to live a normal lifestyle," Camp.
She adds they are in need of donations, especially around the holidays. For an address and phone number and other information please click on InterFaith Hunger Project.
