Six Texas Panhandle counties are currently under a burn ban at this time.
Moore County commissioners recently enacted a burn ban that will be active for the next 90 days unless extended or repealed.
The dry conditions and windy days make it an ideal climate for grass fires to start.
The other counties that have burn bans in place include:
Castro
Moore
Hemphill
Oldham (western half)
Wheeler
Union
If you live in one of the counties that have a burn ban in place, no outdoor burning is allowed.
Fire officials say to protect your property from fire, allow for a 30 foot defensible space around your property. You can do that, by trimming trees or bushes, move combustibles away from the house, rake leaves, and mow or water the grass, by doing all of those things you can better protect your property.
Officials also say the cause of most grass fires in the Panhandle are from lit cigarettes being thrown from car windows.
