AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Doug's Barbeque has been in business more than 50 years. But it's been said, when Blockbuster moved into town some years ago, Doug's faced an uphill battle to stay in business.
However, Ronda Richardson, the current owner, says Doug Harrison and J.D. Ball wouldn't go down without a fight.
"My grandfather got up a petition and they got 5,000 names of people in Amarillo to keep Doug's Barbeque here."
And that's where they remain today. Blockbuster, which moved in next door anyway, is in fact on its way out.
"I think its really funny that we're still here and they're going, we're going to out last everybody."
One customer hopes that's the case because Doug's has become a special place.
"It's a local place to come and I've been coming for years, this is my mother's favorite place to come for lunch," said Sharon Surrurier a Doug's customer.
With so much focus on Doug's past, some may wonder what to look forward to in the future.
"We have a few new things but as far as expanding no, and it'll always stay in the family."
Doug's Barbeque has been owned by the same family the entire time it's been around. Ronda Richardson says she intends to keep it that way.
