DALLAS (AP) -- The executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas is resigning to lead First Baptist Church in Midland.

The Rev. Randel Everett in 2008 was chosen to lead the Dallas-based Baptist group.

Everett, who grew up in Fort Worth, previously was senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Newport News, Va. He is a former president of the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in Arlington, Va.

The 61-year-old Everett in recent months has served as interim pastor of First Baptist Church in Midland. He takes over on Jan. 16.

BGCT on Monday announced Everett's pending departure.
