Amarillo Museum of Art to create world's largest indoor paint-by-numbers art project.
The paint-by-numbers project will be a mural of Palo Duro Canyon.
AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The Lone Star State is known for doing it bigger and better, and now Amarillo is on the map to break records. In conjunction with the Amarillo Museum of Art, volunteers, and people from the community, Amarillo is expected to have the largest indoor paint-by-numbers art project.
It's expected to be 10 feet wide. Starting Thursday, the Amarillo College Fuse Arts Club will kick off the event by sketching and numbering the Palo Duro Canyon in the theme of "A Starry Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. It's an effort to bring the panhandle together.
"I think the most important aspect of this is that it's a community involved project, maybe to bring people here to realize that we have an art community and that we have some sort of out-source for people who are not necessarily trained in art so anybody of all ages of all talents or techniques that they use can come and join together to do this," said Alejandra Amaya, the Curator of Education, Apprentice at AMOA.
It'll take two months to finish, and won't start till the first of the year. The paint-by-numbers art kits started becoming popular in thte 1950's. Amaya said it was part of the postwar America; children had more free time than ever before and families had more discretionary income.
It costs $5 to be part of the project. If you want to join, you can come to the museum during it's regular hours, Tuesday - Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m and Saturday and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m..
