AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Experts are watching to see if Texas is heading for another drought. In Amarillo, all the moisture we got earlier this year caused the weeds to grow during the summer, but they've died and become a fire hazard.
The Amarillo Fire Department is expecting the dry weather to persist at least into the Spring and it could get worse before it gets better.
"The problem is back in 2006, a lot of people will remember, the grass fires where we had 50 - 75 mile per hour winds and we had a lot of high grass in the county and we had several grass fires that can get into homes and any kind of structure that's out there, they can even cause loss of life, so that's what we're trying to avoid," said Captain Bob Johnson, from the Amarillo Fire Department.
Dry conditions have led at least 80 Texas counties to enact burn bans. Even Potter County is considering a burn ban. Commissioners are expected to take up the issue at their regular meeting on Monday.
