AMARILLO, TEXAS -- If you drive around Washington Street just south of I-27 you won't have to worry about slowing down for a school zone anymore.
Up until the Christmas break there was a school zone around 40th and south Washington, but its now a thing of the past. The cross walk is still there but it is now just a regular cross walk and isn't designate for the school zone.
City of Amarillo Traffic Engineer, Taylor Withrow, said that several years ago the school boundaries were changed so that the boundary now goes down Washington street. He also said that over the years the number of children crossing that area has decreased. In fact, during the fall semester there were no children using the crossing.
The crossing guard has now been moved and the school zone has been removed.
