CARSON CO., TEXAS -- Officials in Carson County are searching for poachers. Deer carcasses were found in a bar ditch in the northern part of the county near Fritch on Monday. Seven partial and full deer carcasses were unlawfully killed.

The Carson County Sheriff Tam Terry, said they aren't sure where the deer were killed or who did it. They are taking surveillance measures in order to try and catch whoever has been doing the poaching.

"We don't feel like it's someone who lives there, in that area like Fritch or Borger who is coming through and getting rid of some animals they don't want to clean," said Terry.

That part of the county has had problems in the past with trash and animal dumping. Citations have been issued to those caught dumping trash in that area, and citizens are encouraged to keep an eye out for anybody dumping anything in that area.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working with the county to locate the poachers. TPWD takes poaching seriously, as it is a violation of the state's fishing and hunting regulations. On its website the department, reports that it is an offense to fail to keep the edible portions of an animal. It is a Class A misdemeanor to fail to retrieve or to keep in an edible condition a whitetail or mule deer, pronghorn antelope, or desert bighorn sheep hunted without landowner consent.

Carson County is also dealing with a possible mountain lion in the area. In Skellytown, two goats were killed inside their pen, Tuesday morning. Sheriff Terry said there is no way to verify it’s a mountain lion, but the tracks are that of a large cat. If you see a mountain lion in the area you are advised not to approach it but call the sheriff's office at (806) 537-3511.
