ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police have closed an 80-mile stretch of Interstate 40 due to snow and hazardous driving conditions.

Earlier Thursday, state police were discouraging motorists from traveling on I-40 east of Albuquerque as slick roads led to eight reported crashes in a one-hour span.

KRQE-TV says the I-40 closure was between Moriarty and Santa Rosa. There's no immediate estimate on when the highway might reopen.

The fast-moving storm moved in Wednesday, dumping snow on Farmington, Santa Fe and other areas of northern New Mexico before hitting central New Mexico on Thursday.

If you are planning on heading west, call ahead and check the road conditions in New Mexico by calling the following number 1-800-432-4269.
