AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Training in disaster assessment was in full swing at the Texas Panhandle Red Cross.
Whenever there is a large national disaster, the Texas Panhandle chapter is inundated with phone calls from local people who want to help.
"We have to have as many volunteers trained as possible, so when a disaster strikes we can be able to appropriately respond. If we're able to appropriately respond with these volunteers, we benefit our community as a whole because they're the ones that will be affected by a disaster," said Neil McGurk, Red Cross Disaster Trainer.
This training will help start process on a local level.
"We are in a very disaster prone area in the Panhandle, we have tornadoes, severe weather, and house fires that we're constantly responding to. These are our number one disasters that we respond to, and so we have we train volunteers year round that can help people as disasters occur year round," said McGurk.
A state-wide disaster assessment exercise will take place on February 26.
