AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Mayor Debra McCartt will give up her title in May.

She announced earlier today that should would not run for re-election.

Mayor McCartt says she has no regrets and that her life's calling has always been that of public service.

"This has been something that I felt I wanted to do because I have a passion for people. I have a passion to serve, and truly at the end of 10 years I still have that passion to be a servant and servant leader."

During her announcement, McCartt reflected on when she knew she would one day serve as mayor.

"I was flying over the city of Amarillo coming back to town, and I looked down there and I said man I would love to be the mayor of this wonderful community -- look what's happened. The rest is history and now it's January 11, and I'm backing out," said Mayor McCartt.

One of her goals as mayor was to open up communication between the people and the city.

Hopefully we made the citizens understand that we're much more accessible then may be they had realized, and we are there for the community. That was my very first priority.

Mayor McCartt says she will take a short break, but will return back to doing something with the community. She's not sure what that is exactly, but we will make sure to keep you folks posted.
