DENVER, COLORADO -- Colorado state senator Suzanne Williams has spoken for the first time about the crash near Channing where she veered into the wrong lane, hitting an oncoming car, and killing a pregnant Brianna Gomez on Wednesday.

"Right now I'm here to just say thank you to all for being here and thank you for all of your prayers and support during the accident in the last couple of weeks," said Sen. Williams.  However, that's all she had to say about the collision.

Williams was vice-chair of the transportation committee last year and had been expected to lead it this year. However, on Monday, Senate Majority Leader John Morse said he removed Williams from consideration for the post because he's worried she won't be able to do a full-time job. Williams has long been a staunch advocate of stricter seat belt laws, but was the only one wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Williams accident will be considered by a grand jury. We checked Wednesday, Brianna Gomez's baby, Curran Gomez, is still critical condition after being delivered by emergency cesarean section.
