Legendary Amarillo broadcaster 'Dugg' Collins passes away

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Country Music DJ Hall of Famer and Amarillo broadcaster "Dugg" Collins has passed away at the age of 67, on Tuesday, January 11th.

His passing comes a year to the day after the death of his beloved wife, Joyce, she passed on January 11, 2010.

In his most recent radio job, Collins was on the air at KFTI-AM Wichita, Kan., from 1999 until 2008. He got his start in radio at age 16 at KCTX in Childress, Texas, in 1959, and worked at radio stations in Texas and Oklahoma. He also worked here in Amarillo as a DJ for KDJW. Collins was also influential in helping many young broadcasters get their start in radio here in Amarillo.

In 1969, he started his recording career as a country music performer, and charted two singles in 1977.

In his radio career, he won a number of awards and honors, including the Country Music Association's DJ of the Year Award in 1979. He was inducted into the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame in 1996.

He also had the opportunity to appear with Mel Tillis, Hank Thompson, Moe Bandy as well as the Bob Wills Texas Playboys. To read more about Dugg Collins click here.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Trinity Fellowship Church North Ministry Center with Charlie Cox and Johnny Western officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis by Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. He is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.
