AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The YMCA mobilized more than 75 young people to participate in the 23rd Global Youth Service Day Monday.
Millions of young people take part in this project in more than 100 countries around the world. Monday, the Amarillo family YMCA hosted its kickoff event for the project. More than 20 kids were on hand to start collecting clothes and hygiene products for local people who are homeless.
One young man has been involved with this type of service work for almost 10 years. And it's something he says is a rewarding experience. "It's good to help them because they're on the streets without any food and it's just good to go up to a person and give them clothes and have them hand shake you and give you a big hug and it's just heart warming," said Jeremy Thomas, Youth Volunteer. Thomas also told us it's just tough to stay away from the YMCA and that he plans to continue to volunteer for a long time.
