AMARILLO, TEXAS Wednesday afternoon a sub-committee of the Amarillo Traffic Commission is having a public meeting, and among the topics on the agenda are a signing with the group Share the Road and a discussion of cell phone restriction in school zones.

The sub-committee is made up of representatives from Canyon ISD, Amarillo ISD, and the traffic commission. They will discuss with the city attorney what an ordinance restricting cell phone use would look like, and where they would start implementing it.

The state passed a law that allows communities to restrict cell phone usage in school zones, but there must be signs indicating the phone free zones. Each community must also come up with the signs themselves.

The city of Amarillo would need about 400 of the signs, which would carry a total price tag of $30,000.

The meeting is open to the public. It starts at 2:00p.m., January 19th at City Hall, room 305.
