AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as "ICE" announced new plans Thursday to work with employers all over the nation to establish legal hiring practices.
ICE Executive Director, John Morton held a press conference via telephone with news organizations nationwide along with Tyson Foods to announce their compliance in "e-verify", an employment verification program.
More than 2,200 audits were carried out last year by ICE and with their new center just opened, they plan to increase that number this year.
"For those employers who don't want to follow the law, however, a finer approach is in order. That's why our enforcement efforts were at an all time high, criminal arrests, I-9 audits and civil fines. Those businesses who still think compliance is to hard or expensive or worth the time...compliance is not simply a good business practice, it is the law!"
Tyson management said they spend more than $1 million a year on it's own internally monitoring employment status, and thinks joining forces with ICE will make it more cost-effective.
