CANYON, TEXAS -- Young students from around the Panhandle gathered to compete for a chance to play with Amarillo's Symphony. It's part of the Young Performer's Competition. Students with dreams to have the chance to play with Amarillo's Symphony gathered at Mary Moody Northern Hall at West Texas A&M University, filling the halls with music.
From piano to strings, and even vocals, students who have yet to graduate high school competed for the chance to win a $1,000 Saturday and perform with the Symphony come March.
"We want to feature the young and up and coming talent and especially to have that home grown talent its an audience pleaser and many of these students from the time they see the orchestra performing in Kinder Concerts it's their dream to one day be able to perform with the Symphony," Susan White, Executive Director of Amarillo Symphony.
"It would be a great learning experience definitely because what I want really want to do when I grow up is be a viola soloist," Hunter Morris, plays viola.
The grand prize winner, J.T. Hassell plays piano. He'll be performing with the Symphony March 11th & 12th.
The winner from the Strings Division is Susie Lopez, who plays violin won $250. The winner from the Vocal Division is Cara Collins, who also won $250.
