Soap Box Derby, good clean fun

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's fun, fast, and it's a classic event that now has roots in Amarillo! The All American Amarillo Soap Box Derby is coming up quick!

The first race takes place May 21st. There are two divisions, the Stock division is for racers age 8-10 years old.

Stock cars can accommodate a racers up to 5'3" tall and 125 pounds, in the Super Stock Division. The Super Stock division is designed for racers age 10-17 years old. Super Stock cars can accommodate a larger racer up to 6'0" tall and 150 pounds.

Director Wayne Osteen says fundraising for the event is already underway.

"We are having a demonstration party Feb. 5th at Street Scion from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. with Andy Chase and ESPN radio."

Osteen says they are even plans in the works to build a permanent derby park in Amarillo.
