AMAARILLO, TEXAS -- The snow across the panhandle cancelled schools, closed offices, and many businesses as well. Because of those closings my boss wanted to know just what else was closed across Amarillo. So I jumped in our all-wheel Subaru Outback to find out.
The parking lot at city hall is normally filled with cars. On Wednesday, it still was. That's because they were open for business. Polk street is always open and even with the six and a half inches of snow, many businesses still were.
In fact, many places I went to, there were already many people there. "We were going stir crazy at home so we went to Target, then came to Hastings," said Kisha Cerda, who was out at Hastings when I caught up with her.
"I was off of school, my mom was off of work, we decided to play in the snow!" said Carly Artley, who was on her way to Cheddar's.
And restaurants had a trickling in of customers all day. "We were hungry!" said Nick Parsons, "The sun is shining, I like the look of snow, it's not too bad out here," he continued.
Cheddars was open, Blue Sky was open, so was Jason's Deli. They had a line of people and families were feasting. So what did they do to prepare?
"We just hoped our employees showed up, is pretty much all we did," said Chris Prater, the general manager at Jason's Deli. Even Petco was open! The people I ran into just wanted to get out, pick up some movies, and then they had to brace for the cold weather.
Joey Paguta was out with his wife and two kids, "We came out here to rent movies and have a good family snow day." I only found one closing, Baker Brothers, but there were more. I didn't go to every store in the city. And while there were some closings, we've been showing you those as they scroll across the screen on our newscasts, many people opted to brace the cold and go outside.
When they got there and I mentioned the inside, there was just one thought. "It's better than being out here, it's cold out here!" said Stacis Boles, who was out at Hastings.
"We're going to get some movies, go home, and make chicken soup!" said Angela Gutierrez, who was out renting movies with her two daughters.
So could you get another snow day? You can check out your school delays and closings here.
