AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Nearly 800,000 child car seats have been recalled by Dorel Juvenile Group, which includes seats made by Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st.
The group, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in the above child restraint systems. There is a potential for the harness adjustment strap to loosen during use. If this were to happen, the harness may be loose around the child, which could possibly increase the risk of injury in a crash.
The models affected include, Convertible child restraints Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect, and Vantage; Infant child restraints Mico and OnBoard. The child seats were manufactured from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009.
Dorel Juvenile Group will contact all registered owners and will provide them with information on how to obtain a free repair kit. To see if your child seat is affected by the recall click here. Until consumers receive the free repair kit they can continue to use their current car seat as directed by the instruction manual. If you haven't registered your car seat click here to verify your model is included in the recall. The affected seats should not be returned to the retailer.
The Texas Department of Transportation would also like to remind you that here in the Lone Star State, we have Child Passenger Safety Technicians that can conduct free safety checkups and provide one-on-one training to ensure your child safety seat is properly installed and being used correctly. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children 3 to 14 years old.
