AMARILLO, TEXAS -- We live in the age of the internet. From Facebook to other social networking sites kids are being subjected to bullying and even worse, sexually exploitation. But a popular Disney cartoon is helping combat this growing problem. Phineas & Ferb have a PSA cartoon, as well as other Disney favorites. It's a guide for kids on using the internet safely. So, Pronews 7 sought out the experts on what kids and parents should know and how Amarillo Independent School District is educating students on internet safety. Speaking to Teresa Kenedy with AISD who handles internet safety training for adults says the school district takes several steps to ensure the safety of their students when using the internet. For example, school counselors teach a lesson on internet safety to kids from kindergarten to 8th grade. Kenedy says AISD also puts activity books in the middle schools, as well as a jeopardy game that centers around internet safety.

"Most, if not all of our students are using the internet. So we want to make sure when they're using it, it's in a safe manner," said Teresa Kenedy.

Some of the key points they talk to students about is to be sure when to or not to respond to an email. On social networking sites, the school district encourages students know who to invite as a friend. AISD also stresses the importance of being careful with what kind of information students put on the internet and photos. The district also warns students to not share personal information on the internet like their phone number, address, etc.

Kenedy emphases the school district's aggressive approach in using power point presentations and interactive internet books to help educate students.

Experts also advise that parents take an active role in teaching their child about the internet, it's risk and always be aware of what they're doing on the internet and what sites they're visiting. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, parents who teach their children about internet safety can minimize the risks posed when their children use the internet.

NetSmartz is an internet safety resource from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.
