AMARILLO, TEXAS -- More than 200 people gathered today to kick off 2011 march for babies, the largest walking event both locally and nationally.

The walk generates thousands of dollars to help prevent premature births and to help babies with birth defects.

volunteers throughout the amarillo area solicit contributions from individual sponsors and businesses before participating in the three mile walk.

but who does the money go to locally?

"Locally we have the mom-mobile, we help with the neo-natal intensive care units and we give money to education for mom and research," said Joel Richardson, Co-Chair March for Babies.

The actual walk will be April 30th at thompson park where there will be more than 2,000 walkers.

Wonderland Park will also be open for the kids who participate.
