In fact, there are only two categories police saw an increase in incidents and those increases were both very minimal. Larceny thefts increased 0.5%, which while small represents the biggest numbers of complaints filed. Last year, there were 7,800 reports of larceny thefts reported. Burglaries were also up 1.1% with 2,590 being reported last year.

The homicide rate didn't change, with 10 homicides being reported inside the city for both 2009 and 2010.

As for the reason of the decrease, police said that the public's continuing support of the Amarillo Police Department is a key part in their effort to reduce crime.
