FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - A 20-year-old Farmington mother sobbed as she pleaded guilty to felony child abuse charges for leaving her two young children in a hot car in northwestern New Mexico for nearly four hours last August.
Mary Passey told state District Judge Thomas Hynes on Monday she left the children, ages 1 and 3, asleep in the car at a friend's house. She says she then fell asleep at the house because of new medication she was taking.
Hynes says Passey pleaded guilty to attempt to commit negligently caused child abuse resulting in great bodily harm and negligently caused child abuse without great bodily harm.
Farmington Police Sgt. Robert Perez has said the temperature inside the vehicle was 120 degrees.
The children have since been placed with a family member.
