AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Many people are waking up Monday morning without a home.
The high winds on Sunday fueled fires around the Texas Panhandle, including two very large fires in Potter and Randall Counties. The Willow Creek fire, which is what the fire in Potter County is being called, destroyed 30 homes and 27 outbuildings in the Mesilla Park area. One of businesses effected was the Willow Creek Kennels, we are told that kennel did rescue 34 dogs, it is unclear how many animals might have died in the fire. If you had a pet at the kennel, you are being asked to call 806-383-6155. As of early Monday morning, Pronews 7 was told that fire is under control.
The fire in Randall County burned another 20 homes in the Palisades, 4 in Timbercreek and 4 in Lake Tanglewood. The Palisades and Lake Tanglewood remain under a recommended evacuation at this time. That fire is also said to be under control. The Associated Press is reporting the Willow Creek fire burned 30,000 acres, the fire in Randall County is estimated to have burned 2,000 areas by nightfall. Firefighters across the panhandle worked blazes in Hutchinson, Moore, Parmer Counties.
As for today, city officials said they will begin a damage assessment first thing Monday Morning. Many will see the damage to their homes and businesses for the first time.
