Suspicious death now being investigated as homicide

AMARILLO, TEXAS -- UPDATE 3:22 p.m.
Amarillo Police have confirmed  preliminary autopsy results indicate Stephens died from a gunshot to the head.

Police say the weapon was recovered at the scene but they will need to conduct more tests to determine if it is the weapon used in the incident.

The incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

UPDATE: Amarillo Police have identified the victim as 51-year-old Rex Douglas Stephens of Hickory Flats, Mississippi. He was a truck driver for United Furniture Industries.

Officers were called out at 8:15 Sunday morning to the north rear parking lot of the Big Texan.

They found a white man lying behind a semi-trailer dead. Police say he appeared to have a head injury and a possible weapon used in this incident has been recovered at the scene.

Special Crimes is trying to figure out if he was the victim of a homicide or if something else happened.

He has been tentatively identified as an out of state driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Special Crimes at 379-9468
