AMARILLO, TX -- Spring break is just around the corner, and with it, more party-goers will be out and about.
And while you might not think of Amarillo as a party destination, police here will be out with extra patrols to curb holiday drunk drivers.
A Texas department of transportation grant is funding the extra officers who will be out on patrolling for impaired drivers beginning from the 12th through the 20th.
Amarillo had 9 alcohol related fatals last year, but we're doing better since the end of the year with increased patrols.
"We went through Christmas and the New Year's break without any fatalities that were from the intoxicated driver, we we know it's having some impact..,", says Sgt. Steve Davis of the Amarillo Police Department.
A D-W-I arrest and conviction can cost drivers more than 17-thousand dollars, including a 2-thousand dollar fine and and loss of your license.
