AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Another name will appear on the ballot in May's city election for mayor.
Thursday, Jim Brokenbek announced he's running for the position, that brings the total to eight candidates. Brokenbek ran for mayor in the previous election. He says he's running again to represent the people of Amarillo and to make changes and says that's what sets him apart from the other candidates.
"Probably my passion and love for Amarillo more than anything. Am here for the people of Amarillo and I haven't heard anyone else say that," said Brokenbek.
Brokebek grew up in the River Road community and currently lives in the San Jacinto area. He say's he is tired of seeing favoritism toward one part of the city and supports single member districts.
"A group of self interested people can take over the entire city government and hijack the government for their own selfish purposes. As with single member districts we have people from all areas of the city representing a variety of positions and concerns," said Brokenbek.
7 other candidates are in the mayoral race. Paul Harpole, David Grishaum, F.E. "Sandra Dunn" Dunaway, Ryan Vigil, Steve Dawson, Rodney Johnson, and Roy McDowell. Two candidates, Gary Funderburk and Brenda Bennett dropped out of the race. Monday is the last day candidates can file to run. Elections are May 14th.
