AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Spring break is now in effect for many area schools. Many parents are wondering what will their kids be doing all next week. Pronews 7 found there is some fun and educational happenings around town.

"If you ask any teacher what they hope their kids will spend spring break doing, it's not sitting in front of the television," Stacy Clopton Yates, Amarillo Public Libraries Public Relations Coordinator.

Most parents don't want their kids sitting around watching TV either or getting in trouble.

"We know that when kids are not supervised they tend to not make the best decisions and so rather than risk any of the bad that sometimes can't be undone, if you bring them to one of our YMCA camps. We have 1 at all 3 branches then they get to stay fun and busy and active and interacting in a positive way," Joanna Conway, YMCA South Branch Childcare Director.

Amarillo's 5 library branches and 3 YMCA branches have a week packed full of fun. At the libraries, you can find activities from arts and crafts to Guitar HeroDance, Dance, Revolution, movies, sidewalk chalk, science fun and even a scavenger hunt.

"They can come to a science day at the Northwest Library or they can go make kits at the Southwest Library. They can come do crafts at the Downtown Library all of those things that engage your social skills and your building skills and they keep your mind engaged and they're just great things to do over spring break," said Clopton Yates.

At any YMCA branch kids will be participating in a minute to win it program and field trips like to the Discovery Center.

"They're playing the minute to win it games during the week and having prizes and then we also have field trips almost everyday, swimming and then on Friday there's a big competition between all 3 Y's out here on our field that are at Rotary Parks," said Conway.

YMCA said during the week of spring break they do a drop off for students who normally don't attend. For a list of activities at Amarillo's Public Libraries click here. For a list of activities at any YMCA branches click here.
