AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Preparations are currently underway for the elevation of St. Mary's Church to Cathedral status.
The Cathedral is currently at St. Laurence Church, but after March 25 it will have a new home.
"We needed a place much larger than what St. Laurence could accommodate so when St. Mary's burned down, as tragic as that was, it was for us in a sense a Good Friday that lead to Easter Sunday. It was allowed to be rebuilt but much larger," said Bishop Patrick Zurek, Roman Catholic Diocese of Amarillo.
Bishop Zurek tells us what Cathedral status means.
"The Cathedral Church is a very symbolic church and it gets it's name from the Episcopal Chair. It becomes the center of liturgy and it should be the place where the liturgy is celebrated in the finest way possible -- musically, artistically and etcetera."
Activities are scheduled to begin Thursday March 24 at 7 p.m. at St. Laurence Cathedral where Vespers will be presided by the Arch Bishop from San Antonio.
The following day mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Church at which time the cathedra will be moved to the church and blessed.
