CANYON, TEXAS -- It's no secret that school districts all across Texas are looking at budget cuts, and our local school districts are no exception.
In a worst case scenario, estimates show a potential cut to Canyon I.S.D. of $6,000,000-$9,000,000.
That's 10-15% of the district's operating budget.
The best they could hope for is a $4,000,000-$5,000,000 cut, which will still have a significant impact.
"We're hoping to weather the storm through attrition by hopefully some relief on the state mandates and by focusing on efficiencies within the district," said Christy Bertolino, Coordinator of District Communications for Canyon I.S.D.
And it remains to be seen how all that would affect Canyon I.S.D. employees.
"We do plan to make cuts through out the district from administration operations down to the campus level. 82% of our budget is salaries, now we don't know where those reductions will come from, we're waiting to see what the official number will be and whether they tell us they're going to cut across the board or in specific areas."
I found one grandparent of a C.I.S.D. student and she told me she hopes the cuts don't affect the students and what they'll be learning and doing.
"I think we have great teachers and good programs for the kids. I think there are probably other things maybe our government could cut instead of effecting our childrens futures," said Connie Cooper.
C.I.S.D. has budgeted conservatively and has plans right now, not for a hiring freeze, but for a hiring cool.
And they do plan to look at attrition and the shuffling of positions, rather than a reduction in force.
