SUNRAY, TEXAS -- The Sunray Middle School student council is giving back to their community in a big way. This group of students say they're leading their school by example. Becoming a fixture in their community for doing good. They're hoping to not only show appreciation for a community they love, but set an example for their peers. Pronews 7 is shining the spotlight on these students in this week's Region 16 Spotlight Education report. The group of 18 students are 5th and 6th graders that make up the middle school's student council. Since the beginning of the school year they have been giving back to the community. From making rice bags for patients at a local clinic and the elderly, to raising $800 for a charity, even collecting soda can tabs for Amarillo's Ronald McDonald House.
"We give it to the Ronald McDonald House and it's pure aluminum and they melt it down and they get money for the people that have to live there because they're people are in the hospital," said Jake Waldo, 6th grader student council.
The student's even collect Box Tops for Education tabs, which helps the school get money to buy things.
"So we can get a lot more stuff for our school and make it look nicer and the people in the school just don't have to do everything their self and we can help out and do our part," said Cason Scroggins, class president of student council.
All the students agree, it's about setting an example.
"We live in a small community and they help us with our education so we're wanting to give back to them and not to be selfish," Hayden Harp, student council president.
"It's all about giving back to the community because we're actually helping other people then just ourselves and I feel good about helping other people then just me," said Sean Bian, student council.
