AMARILLO, TX -- Thousands of Boy Scouts will be canvassing Amarillo Saturday looking for food to help the hungry.
It's all part of the High Plains Food Bank's project, "Scouting for food," where scouts will be going door to door hoping to help fill up the shelves at the food banks.
So, as you run to the store this weekend to fill up your pantry, you might want to pick up a few extra non-perishable items, as the the High Plains Food Bank and Golden Spread Boy Scouts council are counting on you to help them do the same on a grand scale.
"About 5,000 boy scouts will be participating. It's one of our largest food drives, more convenient because it's right at your door. They'll be going door to door to get the food, and we fell its the best way to get donations, " says Broc Carter, Director of Communications for the Food Bank.
It's pretty simple. Just box up what you can donate and leave it on your front porch. On Saturday, Boy Scouts will go door to door across Amarillo, picking up your donations. Or you can drop off any food items at any United supermarket in the barrels provided...and after the last year, Carter says the Food Bank says it needs all the help it can get.
"We are virtually at a standstill with our volunteers sorting food, we don't have any food to sort, so donations are important. Last year we had a 65% growth, and it make us nervous about what's going to happen this year, so we really need food donations."
