Amarillo Police and witnesses were able to save a man's life, thanks in part to Facebook.
Police were called to the 3800 block of Line Ave. just after midnight on Saturday, March 26. They were called to the scene because an individual had called a crisis hotline threatening to harm himself, police said.
The Crisis Intervention Team responded to the area and tried to find the individual. They were unable to locate the subject.
At 12:50 a.m., officers were then sent to the 3600 block of Aldredge on an individual threatening to harm himself. Police say all indications pointed to the same person making both phone calls.
Another possible address was established through phone records of the person making the call. Officers began checking leads and landed them in the area of the 800 block of Bryan.
Police were also advised that calls were being received of the individual making comments on Facebook of his intentions. A witness who saw the comments flagged police down and said they were also looking for the individual.
Officers continued to search the area for 45 minutes and the witness attempted to find out more information on Facebook. A description of the house was finally obtained and police found the house.
"We've got the resources at our fingertips, where we can call somebody to come to somebody's house and talk with them if we need to. We just have the time and the resources that a normal patrol officer doesn't have," said Neil Jensen of the Crisis Intervention Team.
After knocking at the door, police heard a faint moaning. Officers forced entry and found a male inside that was attempting to take his own life. The noose had to be cut away from his neck and the individual was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
"Without the assistance of the witness and the officer's persistence, this subject would have likely died from his actions," the report read.
