AMARILLO, TX -- You may recall that last week, we were looking at taxes collected here in the Panhandle area, after we learned that the newly proposed Kids Inc. building would cost Amarillo taxpayers an additional 6 dollars a year.

Each taxing district may be a little different...but basically, they collect tax money for the different taxing entities and then turn it over to them.

We spoke with Potter and Randall county tax collectors and got them to do a very general breakdown to explain how your tax money is divvy-ed up.

According to Randall county tax assessor-collector, Sharon Hollingsworth, "Randall county gets 18%, the city of Amarillo gets 15%, the A.I.S.D. gets 57%, Amarillo college gets 9.2% and .38 for the Water District and it's all divvied up and given to each district."

Potter county is pretty much the same, though Randall county has a slightly lower county tax rate.

Potter County tax assessor-collector, Robert Miller says those taxes are the binder that holds communities together. "It preserves the quality of life we have, paying taxes for programs designed to help the taxpayer, programs that bind the very fabric of our society :Education, law enforcement, Fire department, Emergency services and infrastructure."

And they say if you have any questions about your taxes, you're encouraged to call your local tax office.
