AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Wouldn't it be nice to never have to stop for gas or pay those rising gas prices?
One local resident now has that option thanks to a new all electric car.
It's called the Nissan Leaf and its one of only six in Texas.
"I thought it was the right thing to do to try to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. This uses 100 percent American energy, and some of that energy is renewable. Environmentally it's also great too cause it's reduced carbon footprint and no emissions," said Dr. William Biggs, Nissan Leaf Owner.
The new car gets the equivalent of 99 miles per gallon combined city and highway, and the estimated electric cost to operate is about $560 every year.
"You know we're over $3.50 a gallon, and for about 20 percent of that cost I can go the same amount of distance in a electric vehicle. Economically, as far as fuel cost, this is far superior -- it's smooth, quiet, there's no vibration from the engine, there no fumes and it's a wonderful ride," said Biggs.
Its limited to about 85 to 100 miles before it will need a charge, and to fully charge a battery it takes about six to seven hours.
The Leaf is not available for purchase anymore right now, but will be in the near future.
A new plant that will produce these vehicles is expected to open in Tennessee in 2012.
