AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The widespread devastation from February's fires are a quick reminder how much the Panhandle Chapter of the Red Cross helps when disasters strike.

So to keep helping, volunteers spent hours trying to raise funds in the southwest part of town.

There were about 20 volunteers standing at four different intersections including a Pronews 7 team.

The event is part of the Red Cross "Heroes" campaign.

It consist of more than 30 individuals and businesses in the community which are trying to raise at least a $1,000 each by the end of this month.

"I've got a sack full of money here. The people are very generous partly in response to the wildfires, but more importantly they just support the Red Cross. So we've got some hard working volunteers collecting money and it's a really great day," said Vicky Richmond, Texas Panhandle Chapter Red Cross Executive Director.

Richmond says we can expect to see around $3,000 made from this event, and probably around $60,000 all together for the Heroes campaign.

All that money stays locally and goes to support our neighbors in the Panhandle with thing like health and safety programs, and military and disaster services.
