Car drives wrong way on I-40 and causes major accident, alcohol possible cause

Amarillo Police continue its investigation into a major traffic accident on Interstate 40 early Sunday morning.

The accident happened at approximately 2:00 a.m. at 11300 I-40. Police say a 2003 Dodge Neon was traveling west bound in the east bound lanes. The car then struck a 2011 Freightliner and careened into a 2004 Freightliner.

The driver of the Dodge Neon was taken to a local hospialwith life-threatening injuries. The driver of the 2004 Freightliner was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the 2011 Freightliner was not injured.

According to police, the main lanes of I-40 East at Pullman Road were blocked for more than six hours and traffic was routed to the service roads. 
Police say alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in this collision. It remains under investigation.
