CANYON, TEXAS -- With 1,000 wins on his plate, Coach Joe Lombard of Canyon is being honored in the April 13 issue of Sports Illustrated.

The issue, scheduled to hit news stands tomorrow, showcases coaches from around the country. Lombard will be on page 24 in the 'Faces in the Crowd' feature.

Stephanie Haberman of Sports Illustrated tells Pronews 7 that the coaches are chosen from different sports based upon their merit.

"This feature is for coaches who really stand out," said Stephanie Haberman of Sports Illustrated. "Coaches are nominated and it's a lot of word of mouth."

Here is the article from the magazine:

"Lombard, a 58-year-old phys-ed teacher, led the undefeated Canyon High Lady Eagles over Austin LBJ High in the Class 4A championship on March 5, his birthday, to extend his record for career state basketball titles-girls' or boys'-to 15. He won his first in 1979, as a rookie coach at Nazareth High. He has had just one technical foul while amassing a 1,100-98 record."
