AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The TIRZ Board met today to discuss a number of items on the agenda but the main focus was funding for new streetscape projects downtown.
The project for the First United Methodist Church's new downtown streetscape has created some controversy.
According to Sheila Sims, the project architect, there have been negative letters and comments toward the project mostly, because of the fact that it deals with a church, but after long deliberation the board chose to approve that funding.
"The people need to be reminded that the area thats under question that this money will go for it in the public right of way, it's on city property and it's for the betterment of downtown," said Sims.
Sims also said that this is big victory for them and that the next step is to bring it in front of the city commission.
