AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Panhandle Congressman Mac Thornberry held a press conference in the area today to update us on what's happening in Washington.
Pronews 7 was able to get a one-on-one with him afterwards, to get his views on issues like medicare, taxes, and President Obama's budget.
Thornberry talked about his recent trip to Afghanistan and Iraq and how far they have come in recent years.
He spoke about gas prices and our use of oil, and after he was done I sat down with him to hear what he had to say about the Republican budget plan and it cutting Medicare and Medicaid.
"The thing on Medicaide is that you give the states more flexibility to design their programs the way that makes the most sense for that state and obviously if you're trying to provide healthcare for low income folks it's going to be different in Texas than it is in Conneticut, but yet the government has a one size fits all approach."
Thornberry says it's competition that helps restrain price growth and right now we don't have that, and he thinks there is only one way to fix the problem.
"A good start would be repealing the Obama Health Care Bill cause that took about 600 billion dollars out of Medicare, which makes it's financial problems in short term more difficult."
And that uncertainty is why Thornberry says no companies are hiring.
"Unfortunately because of the uncertainty about taxes going up, the health care costs, the regulations, companies are scared, they don't want to stick their neck out, they don't want to hire anybody and that's a big part of the reason the recovery has been so slow."
Thornberry also said he feels President Obama is all about high taxes and high spending, and that gets the government too involved in our lives, and that people can make better decisions for themselves.
