LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- Firefighters are reportedly making significant progress in containing an active wildfire in southern New Mexico. A spokesman for the Bureau of Land Management says favorable weather conditions Sunday helped crews contain about 75 percent of the 12,500-acre Abrams Fire.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports the wildfire started April 20 during a live-fire training exercise on Fort Bliss land. Fire officials say water dropping helicopters doused the flames and ground crews worked Sunday to dig containment lines.
The BLM says mild winds and cooler temperatures are expected Monday and officials think the better weather conditions should help the fire- fighting effort.
