AMARILLO, TEXAS -- One man is dead after police say he went the wrong way on the I-27 frontage road.

It happened Monday evening just after 6 on the frontage road just off Hillside. Police say Glenn Ray Spencer, 79, was traveling the wrong way on a one way. He was going northbound in a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the southbound lanes.

That's when he struck a 2005 Chevy Cobalt driven by Jose Francisco Ortega, Jr., 20, of Stratford.

Spencer and Ortega were both transported to the hospital. Spencer died and Ortega was admitted with life-threatening injuries.

Neither driver appeared to be wearing a seat belt, police said.

An autopsy has been ordered and the wreck remains under investigation.
