AMARILLO, TEXAS -- The official planting season at The High Plains Food Bank has kicked off. Saturday dozens of volunteers started planting in the community garden.
The food produced in the garden is more important than ever right now with the food bank feeding a record number of people. Last year the food bank distributed a record 7.2 million pounds of food. 20,000 pounds of that came from the community garden.
With the help of volunteers and a newly funded water catchment system, the food bank is hoping to get more healthy nutrition meals in homes this busy summer season.
"This is a very integral part of what we're doing and when you see fresh produce handed out to people who have otherwise could not afford it, or have access to it, it really is an amazing thing," said Zack Wilson, the HPFB Executive Director.
The High Plains Food Bank is always looking for volunteers to help maintain their garden. For more information on the garden, click here.
