AMARILLO, TEXAS -- It's a subject many women don't talk about, their bras! But for a group of women talking about them is exactly what they want to do. Sharing their story of breast cancer survival and doing so with a decorated bra.
"This is a special program because it involves a great many of the survivors, their family and friends and it allows them an opportunity to express their journey with cancer in an artistic way," said Leticia Goodrich, Founder and Executive Director of Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition.
For a special group of survivors, these bras represent their battle with breast cancer. A personal story of grieve, overcoming difficulties, and celebrating hope.
"The name of my bra is New Life in a Bed of Roses, because everybody that I was affiliated with or did anything with through my breast cancer was so sweet and beautiful like a rose, but at the same time their was still the pain like thrones," said Connie Wilson, Breast Cancer Survivor and Bra Creator.
Bra Talk is an annual event hosted by the Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition. It's purpose is to share breast cancer stories and help get the word out to women that it can happen to you, and early detection can save your life.
"It's important to you and it's important to your family to find out how you are and get it taken care of quickly because the sooner you find out the more that they can do and the least you have to go through," said Wilson.
Not only is this an event to raise breast cancer awareness, but therapy for those survivors.
"It does help them cope better and move along and make the changes that they need to make when they get a dreadful disease," said Goodrich.
For women who have little to no insurance, the Amarillo Area Breast Health Coalition through a grant is able to help you get a mammogram for free. For information you can call the coalition at 331-4710 or click here.
