AMARILLO, TEXAS -- An Amarillo High School is making history. North Heights Alternative School students are the first high school students to develop an app for iPads and iPhones.
Monday, Pronews 7 caught up with the teacher and two students who have come up with an Amarillo 365 app.
That app should help anybody who's looking for something cool to do.
"It's a guide for Amarillo for all the attractions like landmarks and dining and shopping," said Lizzy Romero the Amarillo 365 Spring Director.
And it's not just for the traveler who is passing through.
"Even if you're not just a traveler I think you can still use it even if you live in Amarillo I think it'll be good...there's a lot of stuff I never knew about in Amarillo that I found out about by doing all the research."
But can you imagine just how much research goes into building an app like this from the ground up?
"We researched that there was 4.8 million visitors that stay overnight annually in Amarillo and 6 million pass through each year," said Kevin McKinney, the Amarillo 365 Assistant Spring Director. "So we did research and then we'll set up, maybe, a meeting or something with the director that we can talk to to give us more information about it."
Mark Williams, North Heights English Teacher and Supervisor of this project says, "We go out and we do all the research we meet with the business leaders, community leaders the kids basically are writing on their entries, they're doing 4 to 5 entries of about 150 words. They're having to do some intense research."
But it's research Williams feels will pay off for whoever purchases the app.
"They're providing a first person experience so when you go out for a dining experience, when you go out for lodging, when you go out to the Palo Duro Canyon, wherever you go these kids will have done it and can provide an interesting point of view."
The app will feature pictures from each location, and it will also provide navigation, so if you do want to visit one of the locations in the app, you can just click the map and it will lead you there.
Williams says the app will be finished in September for release around Christmas.
The app will cost $2.99, but $1 from each purchase will go into a scholarship fund for each student who works on it.
