AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Good news for Amarillo's job market. The approval Tuesday by the City's Economic Development Corporation of two grants could mean help with job creation and better qualified employees. For Amarillo College, a grant of $184,000 will help it's East Campus Machinery Program update some equipment.

"Amarillo College has recently reactivated its machinery program and had asked us for assistance to upgrade some of the equipment to buy some tools necessary to teach modern technic and to help bring the program back up to speed," said Buzz David, AEDC President.

David says just that grant approval for AC will do several things to help our local economy.

"It does a couple of things for the local economy. One, it helps provide some better trained, better skilled employees and then it helps those companies that hire them which is ultimately the goal to be more competitive and be able to produce better quality project," said David.

But in addition to that, Affiliated Foods got an $840,000 that will help expand it's supply operation for 53 food chain stores. That would add 84 new positions.

"It's always good news when we have jobs created and it's also important we do things that help companies be more competitive and retain the jobs and the opportunities that are here," said David.

Both items still need the approval of the city commission, and that could come in the next few weeks. Meantime, city commissioners have approved an AEDC grant of over $300,000 to AC for it's Electrical Technician Training Program.
