AMARILLO, TEXAS -- We all agree it's a good idea to teach our young people the importance of giving back to their communities.

That's the idea behind a program that's in 24 Amarillo ISD schools. Throughout the month of May, 24 schools, including Coronado Elementary are participating in A OK, "Acts of Kindness". Each school decides how it's students can give back together and individually. As a school, Coronado is raising donations for the Snack Pak 4 Kids Program. It's a program that helps keep kids fed over the weekend.

"Well this week, we're having an Act of Kindness and, well we're donating food to the kids who need food on the weekends so they can eat," said Cody Thompson, 5th grader at Coronado Elementary.

Amarillo ISD officials say they're hoping the program teaches all students the importance of understanding and how to give without expectations. From talking with students, it's already making an impact.

"I open doors for my sister, so my sister can go outside," said Quinn McCurdy, Pre-K at Coronado Elementary.

"I help them cross the street," said Mattie Nichols, 1st grader at Coronado Elementary.

"Whenever I know that some of my friends don't have the same stuff that I do, we have a garage sale and we give them some of our stuff.," said Emma Isern, 1st grader at Coronado Elementary.

"I think more than anything we're teaching them that we can give without expecting something in return," said Mercy Perez, Coronado Guidance Counselor.

School officials hope "Acts of Kindness" is a huge success. If it is, they'll keep it going in the fall.
