ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Albuquerque City Councilors did not extend a contract to keep red light runner cameras clicking away at intersections.

Albuquerque's agreement with Redflex Traffic Systems ends May 24, and the cameras will be turned off if no extension is in place before then. The council's next scheduled meeting is June 6.

If the contract gets done, the cameras will be on again.

The city's director of public safety says he believes councilors opted against considering the contract Monday because the agenda was already packed with budget proposals and amendments.

The Albuquerque Journal reports Mayor Richard Berry has proposed a one-year contract with Redflex that could be renewed for up to five years after. The contract was tailored to make the program pay for itself without a city subsidy.
